NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster baseball team swept Grove City at home in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. The Titans won game one 2-1 and game two 12-3.
Â
"It's a rivalry game, we are proud to take two and get some momentum going," said head coach Pat Riley. "We were up for it and overall excited for the future. We aren't going to think about it too much because we have a good Chatham team coming here tomorrow"
Â
In the bottom of the seventh in game one with the bases loaded, junior
Frankie Manios (Warren, OH / Howland) hit a grounder to the pitcher, which caused an error that brought senior
Seth Schrader (Fredonia, NY / Fredonia) in for the game-winner. Sophomore
Timothy Lewis (Southwest Harbor, ME / Wilmington Area) earned his third win of the season with a career- and game-high seven strikeouts in the complete-game effort.
Â
"Frankie is a good situational hitter for us," said Riley. "We needed some contact, and it was a situation to put the ball in play and he's good at that."
Â
Game two was highlighted by Westminster's (9-4, 4-0 PAC) nine-run inning in the fourth. After trailing 2-0 after the second inning, the scoring outburst in the fourth was capped by a single from senior
James Diamond (Moon Twp, PA / Moon Area) that scored Schrader from third (9-2). For the remainder of the game, the Titans held Grove City (12-6, 3-2 PAC) at bay. On the mound, first-year
Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, PA / Lincoln) earned his second win of the season with a team-high four strikeouts.
Â
The Titans were led by Schrader, who went a combined 4-for-8 with three runs-batted-in. Diamond finished with three hits on the day with one run-batted-in. Sophomore
Chase Tomko (Hermitage, PA / West Middlesex Area) went 2-for-4 in game two with a pair of runs-batted-in, followed by senior
Matt Costello (New Castle, PA / Union Area) with two hits and two runs-batted-in during game two.
Â
Westminster is back in action Wednesday, March 30 as it hosts Chatham in a conference bout. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
