Murrio scores 1,000th point in loss to No. 24 Messiah

MIAMI GARDENS, FLA.--The Westminster College women's basketball team fell to 24th-ranked Messiah 63-49 Sunday afternoon at the Cruzin Classic. Senior Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Brentwood) finished with a game-high 26 points to become the 10th 1,000th point scorer in program history.

Westminster (7-3) played a pair of games at St. Thomas University's Fernandez Family Center this weekend. Saturday, the Titans defeated Spalding 57-50. 

Murrio finished 10-of-15 shooting from the field and was 4-of-4 from the free throw line. She added five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Her 1000th point came on a layup with 4:10 remaining in the fourth quarter which cut the Messiah (8-2) lead to seven, 55-48. 

Junior Mariah Vincent (Franklin, Pa. | Kennedy Catholic) pushed Westminster's lead to eight, 10-2, with a jumper at the 6:28 mark of the first quarter. The Titans carried a 18-15 lead into the second quarter. 

The Falcons outscored the Titans 6-0 over the first 6:08 of the second quarter to grab a three-point lead, 21-18, with 3:52 to go in the half. Messiah went into the break leading 31-25. 

Up 47-41 after three quarters, Messiah doubled up Westminster in the fourth, 16-8, to secure the 14-point victory. 

Vincent and freshman Gracie Schill (Rootstown, Ohio | Akron Hoban) each had five points for Westminster. Senior Lindsay Bell (Youngstown, Ohio | Ursuline) registered a game-high 12 rebounds. It was her fourth-straight game with double-digit boards. 

Reese Hardin lead four Messiah players in double figures with 12 points. 

Westminster shot 40.0 percent (20-50) from the field. Messiah turned 19 Westminster turnovers into 13 points and outscored the Titans' bench 14-6. The Falcons finished with a 32-28 edge on the glass. 

Westminster returns to the court on Friday, December 30 at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Waynesburg. Tipoff at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse is scheduled for 2 p.m.
