NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster women's basketball team won, 75-38, at home against Thiel in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest Saturday afternoon.
"I think defensively we did a good job contesting their shots early and making them take some tough shots", said head coach
Rosanne Scott. "When you are playing the second round of the conference schedule, there are going to be close games. Having that advantage of playing better defense and executing on that end…we really focused on that and focused on our game play and they did a good job."
Westminster (10-7, 7-4 PAC) started the game on a 16-2 run, capped by a layup from junior
Lindsay Bell (Youngstown, OH / Ursuline) off a dish from classmate
Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, PA / Brentwood). The Titans finished the first quarter on a 13-0 run to take a 29-5 lead to the second interval. Westminster continued to limit Thiel's (4-9, 2-5 PAC) offense as it held a 44-17 lead at halftime.
The second half was highlighted by the Titans' stifling defense, as they held the Tomcats to 22 points in the half. Westminster conducted an 8-3 run at the end of the third quarter and took a 58-29 lead into the final quarter. The Titans kept Thiel at bay and remained in the lead for the rest of the game.
The Titans were led by senior
Magen Polczynski (Irwin, PA / Norwin), who posted a game-best 20 points to go along with three rebounds and two assists. Murrio registered 17 points, seven boards, and five assists. Bell notched her eighth double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high ten rebounds. Sophomore
Caitlyn Condoleon (Warren, OH / Warren JFK) tallied two points, three rebounds, and a career-high four assists. Sophomore
Mariah Vincent (Franklin, PA / Kennedy Catholic) recorded three assists and tied a career-best two steals.
"We wanted to get back together and work on the little things and get back in that win column and advance in the PAC play", said Bell. "My contribution comes from the passes of my teammates", Bell added, "We had a lot of assists today as a team and we also won the battle of the boards".
The Titans are back in action Wednesday, February 2 as they compete against Chatham on the road in a PAC matchup. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
