NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster men's soccer team lost, 4-3, in a suspenseful overtime game against non-conference foe Carnegie Mellon on Saturday.

Westminster (2-3) was down 3-1 to Carnegie Mellon (3-0-1), who recently beat nationally-ranked John Carroll, with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. That's when graduate student Nick Iregui (Gig Harbor, WA / Charles Wright Academy) answered the bell as he capitalized first with a penalty kick for a goal and then 40 seconds later senior Sam Accordino (Canfield, OH / Canfield) dished out an assist to Iregui who headed in the tying goal to send the game into overtime knotted up at 3-3.

For the majority of the first half, the Titans and Tartans engaged in a defensive battle. Carnegie Mellon struck first when Kiran Sarvepalli scored at the 34:48 mark. A few minutes later, senior Accordino answered back with a throw-in goal. With 30 seconds left in the first half, Carnegie Mellon gained momentum when Jake Slackman scored. The Tartans carried a 2-1 lead into intermission.

At the 50:38 mark in the second half, Josh Baugh found the back of the net to increase Carnegie Mellon's lead by two, 3-1 – before Westminster's last-minute heroics.

As the ten-minute overtime period progressed, with 15 seconds remaining, Mason Shockley scored the golden goal for the Tartans.

The Titans are back in action on Monday, September 13 as they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. to face off against La Roche University. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
