Softball: Titans Eclipse 30-Win Mark, Sweep Chatham on Senior Day

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College softball team swept the Chatham University Cougars on Senior Day Saturday afternoon. The Titans won both games, shutting out the Cougars in game one by a score of 6-0 and won game two, 5-1.
 
With the sweep, Westminster won its 29th and 30th games of the 2021 season, only the second time the Titans have won 30+ games in a season (2001 – 32 wins) and increased their win streak to 12 games.
 
In game one, Westminster (30-2, 14-2 PAC) scored first when sophomore Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, PA / Laurel) hit a sacrifice-fly to score classmate Brooke Atkins (New Castle, PA / Laurel) and give the Titans a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, senior Haley Bedalota (Aliquippa, PA / Hopewell) delivered an RBI-single to make it 2-0. With that RBI, Bedalota tied Kailey Liverman for the most RBI's in a season in program history with her 45th of the season. Westminster did most of their damage in the fourth inning, plating four more runs. However, junior Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) did not need much offensive support, as she kept Chatham (13-19, 8-10 PAC) at bay en route to her league-leading seventh shutout of the season.
 
In game two, Westminster again struck first when sophomore Leah Pancake (North Lima, OH / Beaver Local) smashed a solo home run out to left field to give Westminster a 1-0 lead. In the third, the Titans plated three more runs, capped off by a two-RBI single by Latess. Chatham kept things interesting with a run in the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-1. However, Titans sophomore Ashley Wire's (Poland, OH / Poland Seminary) RBI-triple in the bottom of the sixth sealed the victory for Westminster.
 
Atkins paced Westminster in game one with a game-high three runs scored and tied a game-high with two hits with Brown and classmate Alexis Yates (Oakdale, PA / South Fayette). On top of her two hits at the plate, Brown collected the shutout in the circle, giving up five hits and striking out five.
 
Yates tied a game-high with first-year Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, PA / Grove City) with two hits, while Latess collected a game-high two RBIs. Malczak earned her 15th win in the circle, tossing a complete game, giving up six hits, one run and striking out five.
 
Westminster will be back in action tomorrow for its final regular season doubleheader as it hosts the Franciscan University Barons. Game One is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
