Softball: Titans Roll to 18-0 with Sweep of W&J in PAC Opener

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster softball team remained undefeated with their 18th-straight win following a sweep of Washington & Jefferson on the road in both team's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener on Tuesday.

The Titans shut out the Presidents in game one, 6-0, and won game two in six innings, 11-1. The shutout was Westminster's sixth of the season. Westminster's 18-game winning streak ranks second-longest in program history.

Westminster (18-0, 2-0 PAC) scored the first run in game one when senior Haley Bedalota (Aliquippa, PA / Hopewell) connected on an RBI-single. The Titans followed with two runs in the fourth, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh. Sophomores Leah Pancake (North Lima, OH / Beaver Local) and Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, PA / Laurel) highlighted the sixth inning with back-to-back home runs. Pancake now has a PAC-best five home runs on the season, two more than second-place. Junior pitcher Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) improved to 8-0 with her conference-best fourth complete-game shutout (also two more than second-place), while striking out six batters. Washington & Jefferson (8-9-1, 0-2-0 PAC) scored its only run in game two (and of the day) in the first inning off a sacrifice fly. Titan sophomore Brooke Atkins (New Castle, PA / Laurel) scored the tying run in the third inning. First-year Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, PA / Grove City) put the Titans in front, 3-1, with a two-run shot in the fourth inning. The Titans added another run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and five in the sixth forcing the game to be called due to the mercy rule. Malczak threw another gem for her team-best ninth win of the season, only allowing four hits in a complete-game effort. Malczak also has the most wins in the league without a loss at 9-0. Westminster outhit W&J, 20-4, led by Latess who went 4-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. For the day, Latess went 6-for-7 with three RBIs and scored four times.

The Titans are back on the field Wednesday, April 7 with a home doubleheader versus Geneva. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
