Baseball: Titans Drop Two at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Westminster College baseball team lost both games against the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Titans dropped game one, 5-2, in a nine-inning game, before falling in game two by a score of 11-5 in a seven-inning contest. The second game did not count towards the PAC standings.

In the first game, Waynesburg (4-6, 4-6 PAC) got on the board first in the third inning with a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets tacked on one run a piece in the fifth and sixth innings and led 4-0 after six. Westminster (4-10, 2-8 PAC) rallied in the seventh inning, as graduate student Frank Cinicola (Cranberry Township, PA / Seneca Valley) slapped a two-RBI single to right field to cut the Waynesburg lead in half. However, the Titans did not get any more offense for the rest of the contest.

Junior Dawson Porter (Kittanning, PA / Armstrong) led the Titans in game one with a team-high two hits. Cinicola had a team-high two RBIs, while classmate Tyler Barnot (Bethel Park, PA / Bethel Park) and junior James Diamond (Moon Twp, PA / Moon Area) each scored a run. First-year southpaw Logan Exler (Verona, PA / Serra Catholic) put forth a solid outing with 6.1 innings pitched, eight hits allowed, four runs (two earned) and four strikeouts. Classmate Nathaniel Wilkins (Herminie, PA / Yough) tossed a scoreless inning in relief.

In the nightcap, Westminster scored first, plating four runs in the top of second inning to take an early 4-0 lead. Westminster got three of those runs off the bat of first-year Cooper Krawczyk (Lewiston, NY / Lewiston-Porter), who deposited a three-run home run to left-center field. The Titans held a 4-1 lead entering the fifth inning, when Waynesburg blew the game open with a 10-run bottom half to take a commanding 11-4 lead. The Titans got a solo home run from Cinicola in the top of the sixth, but the lead generated by the Yellow Jackets proved insurmountable.

Krawczyk boosted the Titans in game two with three RBIs (all off his three-run homer), while Cinicola added an RBI off his solo homer. First-year Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, PA / Central Valley) added a team-high two hits. Sophomore righthander Joseph Kozlina (Cranberry Township, PA / Seneca Valley) got the start on the mound, turning in four innings, giving up four hits, one run and striking out four.

Westminster is back in action on Monday, April 5 to finish its series with the Yellow Jackets in New Wilmington with another doubleheader. Game one is slated for 1 p.m.
