LATROBE, Pa. – The Westminster College softball team swept Saint Vincent in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader on the road Wednesday.
In game one, Westminster (22-2, 6-2 PAC) got on the board first in the second inning off an RBI-single by junior
Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool). First-year
Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, PA / Grove City) brought in another run, reaching first on a fielder's choice to put the Titans up 2-0. Saint Vincent (9-12-1, 3-5-0 PAC) responded with a run in the bottom of the second, but the Titans came back with three runs in the third to go up 5-1. The Bearcats took their first lead of the game (6-5) after scoring three in the bottom of the third and two in the fourth. Sophomore catcher
Leah Pancake (North Lima, OH / Beaver Local) scored the tying run in the fifth, followed by classmate
Brooke Atkins (New Castle, PA / Laurel) who regained the lead for the Titans by hitting an RBI-double in the sixth. Senior
Haley Bedalota (Aliquippa, PA / Hopewell) batted in the final run of the inning to put Westminster up, 8-6, which proved to be the game-deciding score. The Bearcats scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Titans held them off, winning game one, 8-7. Pancake led Westminster, hitting 3-for-4 and scoring three runs. Brown earned her 10
th win of the season, pitching a complete game.
In game two, Brown got the scoring started again for the Titans with an RBI-single in the second. Sophomore
Alexis Yates (Oakdale, PA / South Fayette) scored another run for Westminster and Bedalota hit a two-run double to put the Titans ahead, 4-0, after two. Bedalota now has eight doubles on the year. Westminster went on to score three more in the fourth, increasing their lead to a comfortable 7-0. Saint Vincent battled the remainder of the game, but their comeback attempt fell short and the Titans took game two, 7-4. Bedalota and Yates both put up two hits and one run for the Titans, while Bedalota knocked in a game-high three RBIs. Malczak picked up her 11
th victory of the season in a complete-game effort in the circle.
Westminster will be back at home Saturday, April 17 for a doubleheader against Bethany. Game one is set to start at 1 p.m.
