Softball: Titans Sweep Bethany in PAC Doubleheader

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College softball team took down Bethany in back-to-back games (8-4, 5-2) at home on Saturday.

In game one, Westminster (24-2, 8-2 PAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning due to a two-run double by sophomore Ashley Wire (Poland, OH / Poland Seminary) and an RBI-groundout by sophomore Brooke Atkins (New Castle, PA / Laurel) to bring in junior Krystyna Burdelski (Pittsburgh, PA / Fox Chapel). Sophomore Leah Pancake (North Lima, OH / Beaver Local) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in another Titan run in the fifth. Bethany (13-13, 5-3 PAC) scored three runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 4-3, but Westminster responded with a pair of two-run RBI-singles, courtesy of sophomore Alexis Yates (Oakdale, PA / South Fayette) and senior Haley Bedalota (Aliquippa, PA / Hopewell). Bethany tacked on one more run in the seventh but couldn't make the comeback happen, and the Titans prevailed, 8-4. Junior pitcher Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) earned her 11th win of the season in a complete-game effort, striking out eight and allowing nine hits.

In game two, Westminster struck first again with an Atkins run in the first. Yates batted in another run for the Titans in the second, extending the lead to 2-0. The Bison scored their only two runs of the game in the fifth. In the sixth, Yates hit an RBI-single and Pancake hit a two-run single to bring the final tally to 5-2. First-year pitcher Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, PA / Grove City) picked up her 12th victory of the season in the circle with only six hits allowed and three strikeouts.

The Titans will head to Grove City for a PAC doubleheader Tuesday, April 20, 2021. Game one is set for 1 p.m.
