PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Westminster softball team swept Chatham on the road in dominant fashion with both games ending in five innings. The Titans shut out the Cougars, 8-0, in game one and won, 13-2, in the nightcap.
In the first game, sophomore
Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, PA / Laurel) got the scoring started for Westminster (16-0) with a two-run double to left center. An RBI-single by senior
Victoria Pezzuolo (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) made it 3-0 Titans after one. Westminster would score two more runs in the third, one in the fourth, and two in the fifth. Junior pitcher
Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) threw another gem, with a season-high 10 strikeouts and only allowed four hits in her third complete-game shutout of the season - improving to 7-0 on the year.
In the nightcap, sophomore
Ashley Wire (Poland, OH / Poland Seminary) was the one who got the Titans on the scoreboard with an RBI-single in the second inning. Four more Titan runs followed and just like that, Westminster led 5-0 after two. Wire had a highlight-reel inside the park home run in her ensuing at bat that ignited a 6-run third inning and the Titans led 11-0. Chatham (5-9) spoiled the shutout with two runs in the fourth. Senior Bailey Griffith (McDonald, PA / Fort Cherry) added two more runs in the fifth with a double. First-year pitcher
Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, PA / Grove City), the Presidents' Athletic Conference Softball Rookie of the Week, improved to a team-best 8-0 on the season with her team-leading sixth complete game victory. Malczak only allowed one earned run (two total) on four hits and struck out four.
Westminster's 16 game winning-streak ranks fourth all-time in school history.
The Titans will next play at Washington & Jefferson on Thursday, April 1 in their PAC-opening doubleheader. Game one is set for 3:30 p.m.
