Softball: Titans Sweep Barons on the Road, Collect 13th and 14th-Straight Wins

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Westminster College softball team swept the Franciscan University Barons on the road on Saturday to remain undefeated on the season. The Titans won both games, claiming game one by a score of 10-1 and won game two, 11-1, in five innings.

Westminster has now opened the season with 14-straight wins, the fourth-longest win streak in program history and now just five wins shy of the longest win streak all-time (19 wins – 2018, 2016).

In game one, Westminster (14-0) immediately jumped on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the first inning, courtesy of a two-run home run by sophomore Leah Pancake (North Lima, OH / Beaver Local) to give the Titans a 2-0 lead. After both teams went scoreless for three innings, Franciscan (4-8) broke through in the bottom of the fifth with a run to cut Westminster's lead in half. Leading by just one entering the seventh and final inning, the Titans blew the game open with eight runs, including another two-run homer by Pancake, to take a commanding 10-1 lead to seal the contest.

Titan sophomore Ashley Wire (Poland, OH / Poland Seminary) led with a game- and career high four hits and two RBIs. Pancake followed with three hits, including the two home runs, to go along with a game- and career high four RBIs and a game-high two runs scored. Sophomores Brooke Atkins (New Castle, PA / Laurel) and Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, PA / Laurel) each earned two base knocks. Junior Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) earned the win in the circle after tossing six innings, scattering two hits, one runs and striking out four.

In game two, Westminster again stormed out to a lead with three runs in the first inning, all courtesy of a three-run homer by Pancake, her third dinger of the day. The Titans continued to pour on offense, scoring two runs in the second and one run in the third to increase their lead to 6-0. After Franciscan plated its only run of the day in the third inning, Westminster responded with one run in the fourth inning and four runs in the top of the fifth to put away the Barons.

Sophomore Alexis Yates (Oakdale, PA / South Fayette) led Westminster with a game-high three hits (tying a career-high) to go along with two runs (tied a game-high) and a pair of RBIs. Senior Victoria Pezzuolo (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) tallied a pair of base knocks and Pancake led with a game-high three RBIs (all on her three-run homer). First-year Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, PA / Grove City) got the win in the circle after going five innings, giving up seven hits and one run while striking out four.

Westminster will be back in action on Monday, March 29 when it travels to Pittsburgh for a doubleheader against the Chatham University Cougars starting at 6:30 p.m.
