NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College softball team swept the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets a home on Tuesday to remain undefeated on the season. The Titans shut out the Yellow Jackets by mercy rule in both games, claiming game one by a score of 13-0 in five innings and winning game two, 8-0 in six innings.
Westminster has now opened the season with 12-straight wins, the sixth-longest win streak in program history and seven wins shy of the longest win streak all-time (19 wins – 2018, 2016).
In game one, Westminster (12-0) immediately erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the first inning, with most of the damage coming at the hands of senior
Haley Bedalota (Aliquippa, PA / Hopewell) who smashed a bases-clearing, three-RBI double to highlight the frame. Westminster tacked on four more runs in the contest, but junior
Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) did not need much offensive support, as Waynesburg (7-7) were unable to score a run against her en route to the shutout.
Bedalota and sophomore
Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, PA / Laurel) led the way at the plate for Westminster, as Bedalota had a career-high five RBIs to go along with two hits and one run scored, while Latess tied a career-high with three base knocks and scored a pair of runs. Brown earned the shutout in the circle for her fifth win of the season after tossing five innings, giving up just two hits and striking out five.
In game two, Westminster again took the lead early off a Bedalota RBI-single in the first inning. The Titans extended their lead in the bottom of the third, when senior
Victoria Pezzuolo (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) capped off a four-run inning with a two-run RBI single to give Westminster a comfortable 5-0 lead. The Titans tacked on three more runs, courtesy of a two-run single in the fourth inning and another RBI-base hit in the sixth to induce the mercy rule.
Bedalota was one fire in game two, as she went 4-for-4 with five RBIs (tying her career-high mark set in game one). Sophomores
Brooke Atkins (New Castle, PA / Laurel),
Leah Pancake (North Lima, OH / Beaver Local) and
Ashley Wire (Poland, OH / Poland Seminary) each added a pair of hits, while Atkins had a game-high three runs scored. First-year
Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, PA / Grove City) improved to 6-0 in the circle on the season as she tossed six scoreless innings, giving up only four hits and striking out five in the shutout.
Westminster will be back in action on Saturday, March 27 when it travels to Steubenville, Ohio for a contest against the Franciscan University Barons in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
