GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Westminster College baseball team split with the Thiel College Tomcats in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Titans won game one, 8-5, while the Tomcats claimed game two in an offensive onslaught by a score of 21-15. Westminster was the home team for both of these contests.
In the first game, Westminster (3-3, 2-3 PAC) tacked on the first three runs of the contest in the first three innings, capped off by double by first-year
Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, PA / Hopewell) to give them a 3-0 lead. The Titans continued to increase the offense, scoring five of the next six runs to hold an 8-1 lead going into the seventh and final inning. Thiel (2-3, 2-3 PAC) made things interesting with a four-run seventh, but the Titans held on for the victory after bringing in first-year pitcher
Nathaniel Wilkins (Herminie, PA / Yough) to close out the game. Junior
Dawson Porter (Kittanning, PA / Armstrong) enjoyed arguably the best game of his career, going 4-for-4 with four runs scored (game- and career high). Murgenovich, graduate student
Frank Cinicola (Cranberry Township, PA / Seneca Valley) and junior
Seth Schrader (Fredonia, NY / Fredonia) each tallied a pair of base knocks, while Schrader swiped two bases. Senior
Paul Midili (Spring Hill, FL / Bishop McLaughlin Catholic) earned his second win in as many starts, as he tossed six innings, scattered six hits, gave up one run and five strikeouts. Wilkins picked up the save, his third of the young season.
In the nightcap, both teams exploded offensively for 34 total hits (19 – Thiel, 15 – Westminster) in a slugfest, as Thiel held the edge, 15-6, after five innings. Westminster scored four runs in the sixth inning to make it 15-10, but Thiel scored six runs over the seventh and eighth innings to seal the victory. Porter once against lifted the Titans in game two with a team-high three hits and tied a career-high with five RBIs. Murgenovich, Schrader and junior
James Diamond (Moon Twp, PA / Moon Area) all tallied a pair of hits. First-year
Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, PA / Franklin Area) got the start in game two, pitching 2.2 innings. Classmate
