GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Westminster baseball team split a doubleheader at Thiel on Sunday. Thiel won game one in a comeback and walk-off fashion, 8-7, however the Titans regrouped and won game two, 6-3.
Westminster (4-4, 2-4 PAC) came out swinging in game one with a 5-run first inning and held a 7-0 lead after six innings. Thiel (3-4, 3-3 PAC), however, rallied with a run in the seventh, three in the eighth and four in the ninth – including a two-run walk-off single by Derek Knapp. Junior
Logan Minch (Grove City, PA / Grove City Area) started on the mound for the Titans and pitched impressively giving up no earned runs (one total) on five hits in seven innings of work, while tying a career-high with six strikeouts. First-year
Nathaniel Wilkins (Herminie, PA / Yough) received the loss with an inning of relief, giving up four runs on three hits, while striking out and walking two.
In the nightcap, the Titans once again jumped out early – this time leading 4-0 going into the bottom of the third, however, this time they maintained their lead for a 3-run victory. First-year
Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, PA / Central Valley) was responsible for two of Westminster's first four runs with an RBI-double in the first and an RBI-single in the third; junior
Sean Davis (Sharpsville, PA / Sharpsville) scored the other two runs with a two-run single in the first. The Tomcats tried to make it another comeback with a run in the third and two in the fourth, however, the Titans held Thiel off while adding insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Logan Exler (Verona, PA / Serra Catholic) pitched a complete game, earning his first win of the season and his collegiate career. Exler only gave up two earned runs (three total) on six hits, while striking out two (including the final out) and walking one.
Westminster will next play at Washington & Jefferson (6-0, 4-0 PAC), the number one team in the PAC standings, on Saturday, March 27 in a doubleheader. Game one is slated to start at 1 p.m.
