NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The defending Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Champion Westminster volleyball team opened their 2020-21 season with a 3-0 win over Chatham at home Saturday evening.
Titan junior
Becky Adelman (Randolph, OH / Waterloo) registered a match-high 11 kills, while tying a match-high five blocks and earning a match-best three service aces. Classmate
Maya Steward (Los Angeles, CA / William Howard Taft) added seven kills, while senior
Megan Steele (Corry, PA / Corry) and sophomore
Kaylee Sciubba (Tarentum, PA / Deer Lakes) each notched six kills. Sciubba also tied a match-high with five blocks, including a match-best three solo rejections. Junior
Samantha Kelly (Irwin, PA / Penn-Trafford) dished out a match-high 26 assists, to go along with nine digs. First-year
Malia Duffy (Allison Park, PA / North Allegheny) led the defense with a match-high 20 digs. Also registering double-digit digs were Steward and first-year
Lauren Lampus (Sarver, PA / Freeport Area) who both had 13. First-year
Claire Tobin (Battlecreek, MI / Lakeview) added seven digs.
Westminster (1-0) won the first set convincingly, 25-12. In the frame, Adelman had four kills and four blocks, to go along with three service aces. The second set consisted of seven ties. Chatham (0-1) led 5-2, however, the Titans responded with a 6-2 run to take an 8-7 lead. Both teams kept battling, with the Titans maintaining the lead, and the second set was tied at 24. A kill by Lampus and a service ace by Tobin put Westminster up 2-0 going into the final stanza. The Cougars led the majority of the third set and had a late 22-18 lead. The Titans, however, regrouped and closed out the set and the match with seven unanswered points; Steward and Adelman each had two kills apiece in the run. Adelman had a match-best five kills in the final set.
The Titans are back in action Tuesday, March 2 at Washington & Jefferson with a 7 p.m. start time.
