NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – A layup by senior
Anthony Ritter (North Lima, OH / South Range) with 11 seconds left was the difference in the Westminster men's basketball team's 77-76 win over Kenyon at home in a non-conference bout.
It was only fitting that Ritter had the game-winner as he went off with career-high 25 points (10 of 15), including a career-best four made three-pointers (both game-highs), to go along with a career-high nine rebounds (also a game-high). He added two assists, a block, and a steal.
Kenyon (0-4) started the game up 8-0, however, Westminster (3-0) answered with a 10-0 run, capped off with a jumper by senior
Daniel Ritter (North Lima, OH / South Range), to take a 10-8 lead less than five minutes into the game. The Titans climbed out to their first double-digit lead, 40-29, with 3:43 left in the first half after sophomore
Reese Leone (Beloit, OH / West Branch) found D. Ritter for a three. The Titans maintained their double-digit lead and were ahead 47-34 at halftime.
The Titans started the second half extending their lead with their largest of 17 twice, the latest coming at 54-37 with 18:03 on the clock. The Lords started to come back and cut Westminster's lead to single-digits, 68-59 with 10 minutes left, and then to a single possession, 70-67 with five minutes remaining. Kenyon eventually took a 74-73 lead with 3:09 on the clock, its first since midway through the first half. The Lords had a three-point, 76-73 lead, until Leone made jumper with 1:01 on the clock, cutting the margin to one (76-75). Titan sophomore
Andrew Clark (New Middletown, OH / Springfield Local) made a pair of key defensive plays, including a steal off an in-bound pass that set up Ritter's game-winner. The second was a block, his career- and game-high fourth of the game, on Kenyon's Miles Versa layup attempt in the final seconds.
Also scoring in double-digits for the Titans were Leone and D. Ritter with 18 and 15 points, respectively. Leone dished out a game-high seven assists. Senior
Josh Hutcherson (Uniontown, OH / Uniontown Lake) added eight points and six rebounds, while junior
Tyler James (Youngstown, OH / Warren JFK) registered eight rebounds and six points, to go along with a career-high three assists.
The Titans will hit the road for the first time this season with a non-conference game at Transylvania in Lexington, Kentucky on Saturday, Nov. 20. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
