CLERMONT, Fla. – The Westminster College softball team continued their 2020 season at The Spring Games on Sunday. The Titans lost the first game, 7-6, in seven innings, against No. 25 nationally-ranked Manhattanville College (NY). The Titans dropped the second game of the double header to Carroll University (WI) by a score of 9-6.
Against Manhattanville (2-1), Westminster (1-3) got off to a fast start after scoring five runs in the first inning. First-year
Alexis Yates (Oakdale, PA / South Fayette) scored the first run of the game on a passed ball by the catcher early in the first inning. Senior
Victoria Pezzuolo (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) got her first RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring first-year
Leah Pancake (North Lima, OH / Beaver Local) to make it 2-0 in favor of the Titans. The runs kept coming for the Titans in the first inning as senior
Lauren McNany (Emlenton, PA / Allegheny-Clarion Valley) singled home first-year
Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, PA / Laurel) to give the Titans a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Alex Pfab (Cranberry Twp, PA / Seneca Valley) got her first two RBI's of the season as her single scored both McNany and sophomore
Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) to complete the Titan scoring in the first inning. The Valients would get two runs back in the bottom half of the inning, courtesy of a Giovanna Liggett single and an Abby Tanuma double to cut the Titan lead back to three. The Titans increased their lead in the top of the second inning when first-year
Brooke Atkins (New Castle, PA / Laurel) scored on a passed ball by the catcher to make it 6-3. The Valients did not go away, however, as they scored four unanswered runs to complete the game, including a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning by Brooke Franson to give Manhattanville the win, 7-6. Brown pitched 6.2 innings, allowed five earned runs and racked up four strike outs. Pfab led the Titans at the plate with one hit and two RBI's.
Against Carroll, (9-1), the Titans got off to another fast start. Latess scored Yates on a ground out to the shortstop to give the Titans an early 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Pezzuolo doubled scored Pancake to increase the Titan's lead to 2-0. Pezzuolo later scored on an error to add another early run to the Titan's total and make the score 3-0 after the first inning. In the second, Carroll got on the board when Kylie Learman scored on a fielder's choice to the first baseman. In the bottom half of the inning, Atkins' single down the line scored sophomore
Jasmine Woodings (Verona, PA / Penn Hills) to put the Titans back up by three. Atkins then scored on a Latess single up the middle to give the Titans a 5-1 lead. Carroll added two more runs to their total in the third and fourth innings courtesy of a ground out fielder's choice by Learman and a single by Lauren Harshberger. In the bottom half of the fourth, the Titans once again got a run back, as Pancake scored on a fielding error by the right fielder to give the Titans a 6-3 lead. Carroll scored six unanswered runs in the final two innings to get the win 9-6. Sophomore
Krystyna Burdelski (Pittsburgh, PA / Fox Chapel) pitched 5.1 innings, allowed three earned runs on six hits, while collecting one strikeout. Brown pitched 1.2 innings, allowed four runs (three earned) and grabbed two strikeouts. Latess led the Titans at the plate going 2-for-4 and collected two RBI's.
Westminster (1-3) will continue its Florida slate with two games on Tuesday, March 10. The Titans will do battle with Penn State Berks at 9:00 a.m., followed by Wittenberg at 1:45 p.m.
