NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's lacrosse team won, 11-10, in triple overtime over Marietta College at home on Saturday.
Titan junior Shane Fisher (Palm Harbor, FL / East Lake) completed his hat trick in style as he scored the game-winner less than two minutes into the third overtime. Senior Dante Serra (Center Valley, PA / Southern Lehigh) earned the assist.
Tied 1-1 after the first quarter, Westminster (1-5) outscored Marietta (3-3) 4-2 in the second quarter (which included a 4-0 run) and led 5-3 at halftime. The Pioneers went on a 3-1 run to tie the game at 6 with 5:32 remaining. The Titans answered with two-straight goals, courtesy of Fisher and senior Chris Slater (Plum, PA / Central Catholic), and led 8-6 with 2:50 left in the third. Marietta managed to tie the game again (8-8) after a goal to end the third quarter and a goal to start the fourth. Westminster took a two-score lead in the fourth (10-8) with 10 minutes to play, however, Marietta would not go away and forced overtime with two goals of its own, including the tying score with 1:45 to play.
Slater led the offensive charge with a game-high five points, including a game-best four goals. Serra had three points as he scored and tied junior Nick Trella (Moon Twp, PA / Moon Area) for a game-high two assists. Senior Ryan Stiemly (Edgewood, MD / Edgewood) and first-year Ryan Greer (Cranberry Twp, PA / Seneca Valley) both had a goal and an assist. Sophomore Joe Rosa (Newton, NJ / Kittatinny Regional) added a goal.
Titan sophomore Mike Roman (Fort Washington, PA / Germantown Academy) gathered in a team- and career-high 10 ground balls, while junior Jack Granahan (Aldie, VA / John Champe) earned a team-high five caused turnovers. First-year goalkeeper Connor Doyle (Glen Aubrey, NY / Whitney Point) earned 10 saves in a complete-game victory.
Westminster was 4-for-6 in extra-man opportunities, while Marietta was 1-for-3. Chad Stowell led Marietta with three goals.
The Titans will head to Wisconsin for a pair of non-conference games during Spring Break. First up is at Carroll University on Wednesday, March 11 with a 7 p.m. start time.
