GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Westminster College softball team returned to action Saturday afternoon, traveling to Grove City College to take on the Wolverines in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. The Titans dropped both contests by scores of 8-0 and 2-1.
The Titans lost game one in five innings, much due to the stifling performance on the mound by Wolverine pitcher Ashley Cornelius who threw a complete-game no-hitter, while striking out seven. Titan first-year starting pitcher
Krystyna Burdelski (Pittsburgh, PA / Fox Chapel) (5-6) threw three innings, giving up five earned runs on six hits. Burdelski struck out one and walked two.
In game two, sophomore
Ashley Chorney (Indian Trail, NC/Porter Ridge) gave the Titans a 1-0 lead with an RBI-groundout after sophomore
Haley Bedalota (Aliquippa, PA/ Hopewell) and first-year
Jasmine Woodings (Verona, PA/ Penn Hills) tallied back-to-back base hits. The Titans had Grove City down to its final out in the seventh and final inning, however, Wolverine Hannah Dietz connected on a walk-off, two-run home run to left center field to win the game for Grove City. The Titans were led in game two by senior
Cheyenne Shifflett (Etters, PA/ Trinity) and sophomore Breanna Tetrick (New Concord, OH/ John Glenn), who both tallied a pair of hits for the Titans. First-year pitcher
Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) (3-8) went 6.2 innings, scattering five hits, giving up no earned runs, and tallying a career-high eight strikeouts for the Titans.
The Titans fell to 8-14 overall and 1-5 in the PAC. Grove City improved to 10-7 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
Westminster will be back in action Monday when it travels to Pittsburgh, Pa. for a doubleheader at La Roche College, starting at 3 p.m.
