WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College baseball team lost both games in their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday.
The Titans lost game one, 9-1, and game two, 12-8.
In the first game, Washington & Jefferson (16-7, 11-0 PAC) scored one run in the first inning, five in the second, one in the fourth, and two in the sixth. The Presidents did not give up a hit until the fourth inning and only allowed five for the game. Westminster (9-10, 4-4 PAC) scored its lone run in the top of the sixth when freshman
Mike Grazier (Austintown, OH / Austintown-Fitch) singled home senior
Hunter Alexander (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk). Titan freshman starting pitcher
Matt Costello (New Castle, PA / Union Area) (3-2) threw 5.0 innings, giving up nine runs on 12 hits. Costello struck out three and walked the same.
In game two, the Presidents jumped out to a 7-0 lead through three innings of play. Both teams scored a run in the fourth, followed by W&J scoring twice in the fifth and sixth innings. Down 12-1 heading into the top of the eighth, the Titans rallied for a seven-run eighth inning, however the deficit proved too much to overcome. Eight different Titans had an RBI, including senior
Dante Parente (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk) who went 3-for-5 with one run scored and a double. Parente now has seven doubles on the season, tying for a team-best. Alexander and freshman
James Diamond (Moon Twp, PA / Moon Area) also had multiple hits for Westminster. Freshman pitcher
Brandon Cooper (Oakdale, PA / West Allegheny), who got the start for the first time of his career, went 1.2 innings and gave up six runs (four earned) on five hits.
Westminster will next host W&J on Sunday, April 7 for a nine-inning game starting at 1:30 p.m.
