NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College softball team swept a doubleheader against non-conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg at home on Friday. The Titans won the first game, 5-2, and won a shortened game two, 3-1, in six innings due to darkness.
In game one, Westminster (16-16, 7-7 PAC) fell behind early when Pitt-Greensburg (8-26, 4-10 AMCC) tallied the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. The Titans quickly responded when sophomore
Haley Bedalota (Aliquippa, PA / Hopewell) scored on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game, 1-1. The Titans kept the pressure on, notching three runs in the second inning, capped off by an RBI-single by junior
Lauren McNany (Emlenton, PA / Allegheny-Clarion Valley) to extend their lead to 4-1. Both teams went on to score one more run a-piece, but the Titans held on to win game-one by a final score of 5-2. First-year
Madison Brown (Lisbon, OH / East Liverpool) picked up the win for Westminster. She tossed five innings, scattered five hits, and gave up two earned runs to go along with four strikeouts. Brown improved her record to 8-8 on the season.
In game two, the Titans jumped on the board in the second inning when first-year
Alexandra Pfab (Cranberry Twp, PA / Seneca Valley) launched an RBI-double into the gap in left-center field to give Westminster a 1-0 lead. The Titans tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning, making the most of a handful of errors by the Bobcats, to extend their lead to 3-0. Pitt-Greensburg scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, but that would not be enough as the game was declared complete after six innings. First-year pitcher
Krystyna Burdelski (Pittsburgh, PA / Fox Chapel) picked up her eighth victory in the circle this season. She pitched four innings, gave up only one hit, and no runs to go along with two strikeouts. Brown tossed two innings in relief, picking up the save for Westminster.
The Titans return to the field tomorrow for an important doubleheader at Saint Vincent College with PAC playoff implications on the line. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
