Baseball: Titans Compete Against Grove City, Outlast Wolverines in Extras

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College baseball team competed against Grove City College at home on Tuesday, finishing up a suspended game, followed by a doubleheader. The Titans picked up a victory in game one, bouncing the Wolverines, 13-11 in 14 innings.  Despite their exciting extra inning victory, the Titans dropped their second, and third games of the day by scores of 4-0, and 10-0.

The first game of the day picked up in the top of the 12th inning. In the top of the 14th inning, the Titans broke through when freshman Logan Fordyce (Cuyahoga Falls, OH / Cuyahoga Falls) gave Westminster the lead with an RBI-single (the first RBI of his career) to right field, scoring classmate Seth Schrader (Fredonia, NY / Fredonia), putting the Titans on top, 12-11. The Titans would notch one more run, courtesy of an RBI-single by senior Hunter Alexander (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk), going into the bottom of the 14th inning with a 13-11 lead.  Those runs proved to be all the Titans needed, as freshman Matt Costello (New Castle, PA / Union Area) worked his way out of jam to seal the victory for the Titans. Costello won the first collegiate game of his career after going 6.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits. He struck out three and walked the same.

The Wolverines held Westminster to three hits in the first game of the doubleheader, while scoring twice in the second and sixth innings. Alexander had a team-high two hits. Titan senior pitcher Cory Pullen (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) lost his first game of the season, after throwing 6.1 innings and giving up two earned (four total) runs on six hits.

In game two, the Wolverines scored one in the second inning, two in the third, one in the fourth, four in the fifth, one in the sixth, and one in the seventh. Grove City outhit Westminster 11-6. Costello led the Titans with a pair of hits. Titan freshman pitcher Paul Midili (Spring Hill, FL / Bishop Mclaughlin Catholic) (2-2) went 3.1 innings, giving four runs (three earned) on four hits. He struck out two and walked two.

Westminster moved to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in the PAC, while Grove City went to 15-8 overall and 5-2 in league play.

The Titans return to action tomorrow against Geneva College for a single, 9-inning game at home. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
