Baseball: Westminster Sweeps Geneva in PAC Opener

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Westminster College baseball team began their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) slate with a doubleheader sweep at Geneva College on Tuesday. The Titans won game one, 7-2, and, 10-3, in the nightcap.
 
Freshman Seth Schrader (Fredonia, NY / Fredonia) scored the first Titan run in the third inning on an error in the first game. Junior Frank Cinicola (Cranberry Township, PA / Seneca Valley) singled in another run in the third, followed by a two-run double by junior Dante Parente (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk) and Westminster led 4-0. Geneva scored its first run in the fourth. The Titans added three more runs in the fifth (Cinicola and junior Jaret Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles McKinley) both earned an RBI), extending their lead to 7-1. The Golden Tornadoes scored the last run of the game in bottom of the fifth. Parente went 3-for-4 with a double and tied with Cinicola for a game-high two RBIs. Schrader also had a double. Senior Cory Pullen (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) remained undefeated on the mound (3-0) after pitching six innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits. Pullen struck out four and walked five. Junior relief pitcher Marcus Masters (Warren, OH / Warren G Harding) sealed the Titan victory holding the Golden Tornadoes hitless in their last at-bat with a strikeout and a walk.
 
Westminster picked up where it left off in game two, leading 10-0 going into the final half inning of the contest. Geneva spoiled the shutout with three runs in the ninth. Titan junior Tyler Barnot (Pittsburgh, PA / Bethel Park) led all batters as he went 4-for-6 with a game-high four RBIs. Barnot earned an RBI in each his first three at-bats. Freshman Matt Costello (New Castle, PA / Union Area) and Johnson had three hits apiece and an RBI each. Freshman Austin Webb (Wadsworth, OH / Wadsworth) had a pair of RBIs, while classmate James Diamond (Moon Twp, PA / Moon Area) also had an RBI. The Titans connected on an impressive six doubles, led by Johnson with two. Barnot, Cinicola, Webb, and senior Hunter Alexander (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk) also had a double. Cinicola now has a team-high six doubles on the season. Freshman pitcher Paul Midili (Spring Hill, FL / Bishop Mclaughlin Catholic) improved to 2-1 on the year after throwing seven scoreless innings and giving up only four hits. Midili struck out five and walked two. Junior Emilio Rivera (Tampa, FL / Armwood) came in for relief and gave up no earned runs and five hits, while striking out one.
 
Westminster improved to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in the PAC, while Geneva dropped to 4-9 overall and 0-5 in league play.
 
The Titans will host the University of Mount Union Wednesday, March 27 at 4 p.m. for their home opener.
