AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Westminster College baseball team ended their Florida spring break trip with a doubleheader sweep over Medaille College on Friday.
Westminster (4-4) won game one, 2-0, and game two, 14-5. Medaille dropped to 4-4 on the season.
In game one, the Titans scored the only runs in the game in the fifth. Freshman
Seth Schrader (Fredonia, NY / Fredonia) connected on an RBI-double, scoring classmate
Matt Costello (New Castle, PA / Union Area). Two batters later, junior
Tyler Barnot (Pittsburgh, PA / Bethel Park) singled home Schrader. Titan senior pitcher
Cory Pullen (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) improved to 2-0 as he threw a complete-game shutout. Pullen gave up five hits, while striking out nine and walking one.
In the nightcap, Medaille led, 3-1 after two innings of play. The Titans tied the game in the third as junior
Frank Cinicola (Cranberry Township, PA / Seneca Valley) hit a sacrifice-fly and freshman
Austin Webb (Wadsworth, OH / Wadsworth) scored on a Medaille error. After the Mavericks took a 4-3 lead with a run in the fourth, the Titans outscored Medaille 11-1, with the combination of impressive hitting and pitching, in the final three innings for a convincing 14-5 victory. Freshman
James Diamond (Moon Twp, PA / Moon Area) led the Titan offensive charge with a two-run single in the fifth and a two-run double in the sixth. Diamond totaled a game-high five RBIs in his 3-for-4 game. Juniors
Dante Parente (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk) and Cinicola each had two RBIs. Also earning an RBI were senior
Hunter Alexander (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk), junior
Jaret Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles McKinley), and Costello. Diamond had a game-high two doubles, while Parente hit one. Freshman
Paul Midili (Spring Hill, FL / Bishop Mclaughlin Catholic) improved to 1-1 on the mound as he started and pitched four innings, while giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits. Midili struck out two and walked four. Westminster's bullpen, consisting of juniors
Marcus Masters (Warren, OH / Warren G Harding) and
Dante Sienko (Wexford, PA / Pine-Richland) and freshman
Timothy Spicer (Uniontown, OH / Lake) only allowed one combined hit in three scoreless innings to seal the Titan win. Masters, Sienko, and Spicer each had two strikeouts in an inning of work apiece.
Westminster is back on the field at Kenyon College with a non-conference doubleheader Saturday, March 23, starting at 1 p.m.
