Men’s Lacrosse: Titans Fall Late to Guilford in Final Game in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Westminster College men's lacrosse team concluded their Spring Break trip as they lost, 14-12, to non-conference opponent Guilford College on Wednesday.
 
Guilford (4-2) started off the scoring with two goals in the first five minutes, while holding Westminster (3-2) scoreless until 9:02 when junior Chris Slater (Plum, PA / Central Catholic) got the Titans' first goal with the assist by sophomore Nick Trella (Moon Twp, PA / Moon Area). Three minutes later, Slater scored his second goal (6:03) to tie the game at two. The Quakers took the lead back at 5:09, only for the Titans to tie the game again at three on a goal by junior Dante Serra (Center Valley, PA / Southern Lehigh) (4:31). The Titans held the Quakers scoreless for the remainder of the quarter and grabbed their first lead of the game (4-3) when junior Adrian Culp (Gaithersburg, MD / Quince Orchard) found first-year Joe Rosa (Newton, NJ / Kittatinny Regional) for the goal at the 2:46 mark.
 
In the second quarter, the Titans got off to a fast start, scoring three consecutive goals (five consecutive since 5:09 in the first), all three by senior Ryan Shorts (Westlake Village, CA / Oak Park), extending Westminster's lead to 7-3 (its largest of the game). Shorts's goals were assisted by junior Tyler Nordby (Burnt Hills, NY / Burnt Hills) (14:17), sophomore Shane Fisher (Palm Harbor, FL / East Lake) (9:21), and Rosa (7:26). Guilford broke its 16:56 scoring drought with a goal at the 3:13 mark to bring the game to 7-4 going into halftime.
 
In the third quarter, the Quakers held the Titans scoreless, while scoring three goals within the first two minutes at 14:16, 13:52, and 13:02 to tie the game 7-7.  Guilford scored two more goals with 9:49 left then five minutes later with 4:19 left, to take its first lead since the first quarter (9-7).
 
In the fourth quarter, the Quakers struck first with a goal, their seventh unanswered score, at 10:33 to extend their lead to 10-7. At the 9:56 mark, Westminster got back on the board with a goal by Nordby. Just 44 seconds later, Fisher scored to bring the Titans within one (10-9) with 9:12 left in the contest. The Quakers made it a two-goal lead with a goal at 8:19 (11-9).  After the five-minute mark, the Titans rallied to take a 12-11 lead with a goal from Serra (4:39) and two by Fisher (4:09 and 2:12). The first Fisher goal was assisted by junior Ryan Stiemly (Edgewood, MD/Edgewood / Edgewood) and the second was assisted by Culp. After the 2:00 mark, the Quakers went on a run of their own with goals with 1:54 left, 1:25 left, and 0:07 left, to secure the 14-12 victory.
 
Shorts's three goals gave him the team-lead with 14 on the season. Rosa's goal was his 12th on the season. With three more goals, Fisher now has nine on the season, good for third on the team.
 
Titan senior goalkeeper Carter Hall (Zeeland, MI / Zeeland West) totaled 15 saves in a complete game effort. First-year Bennett Webster (Penfield, NY / Penfield) tied Hall with a team-high four ground balls.
 
Westminster will next play a non-conference game at home against Hampton University Wednesday, March 20 at 7 p.m.
