Men’s Lacrosse: Titans Win OT Thriller at Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Westminster College men's lacrosse team won, 12-11 in overtime, over non-conference opponent Greensboro College on Monday.
 
Westminster (3-1) started off the scoring with a goal by sophomore Shane Fisher (Palm Harbor, FL / East Lake) at the 12:52 mark. Later in the quarter, Greensboro (4-3) tied the game (6:28), but the Titans quickly answered with a goal from first-year Joe Rosa (Newton, NJ / Kittatinny Regional) with 5:49 left. The Titans got two more goals from first-year Hamish Mathwin (Marion, Australia / Westminster) (4:17) (his first career goal) and senior Ryan Shorts (Westlake Village, CA / Oak Park) (0:27), to go up 4-1.
 
Shorts started the second quarter where he left off in the first, with a goal in the first minute to put the Titans up 5-1 with 14:04 left in the half. The Pride scored four unanswered to tie the game at five with 7:35 left in the half. Titan junior Tyler Nordby (Burnt Hills, NY / Burnt Hills) quickly broke the tie with a goal (6:53), and the Titans went into halftime up 6-5.
 
In the third quarter, Greensboro held Westminster scoreless for the first 14:28 and scored three goals to take an 8-6 lead until Fisher found Rosa for a goal (0:32) to end the Titans scoring drought and bring the Greensboro lead to 8-7 at the end of the third quarter.
 
The Pride started the scoring in the final quarter of regulation with two goals to go up 10-7 with 11:05 remaining. The Titans drew within two after a goal by Shorts (7:42), only for Greensboro to answer with a goal of its own with 7:22 remaining. Down 11-8, the Titans scored three goals in the final 5:13 with a goal by Fisher (5:13), junior Adrian Culp (Gaithersburg, MD / Quince Orchard) (3:38), and another by Fisher (1:04) to force the game into overtime at 11-11.
 
In the four-minute overtime period, Westminster got the first shot, then Greensboro got the next two, but none were goals. With just 0:14 remaining, Shorts would score his fourth goal of the game to give the Titans the 12-11 victory.
 
Rosa and Shorts are now tied for the team-lead with 11 goals on the season.  Three goals by Fisher brings his season total to six.
 
Titan senior goalkeeper Carter Hall (Zeeland, MI / Zeeland West) totaled 12 saves in a complete game. Senior Reid Lutz (Pittsburgh, PA / West Allegheny) finished with a game- and career-high five ground balls.
 
Westminster will next play a non-conference game at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC, Wednesday, March 13 at 5 p.m.
