BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team won, 69-57, at Geneva College Wednesday evening.
Westminster (8-15, 6-8 PAC) outscored Geneva, 29-15, in the fourth quarter including 16-5 in the final 3:25 of the contest.
Westminster led 11-10 at the end of one. The Titans held a four-point lead twice in the second quarter with the latest one coming at 20-16 with 6:15 on the clock. Geneva (2-19, 0-13 PAC) answered with a 7-2 run to take its first lead of the second quarter (23-22) with 59 seconds left. The score remained the same at halftime.
The Golden Tornadoes had their largest lead of the game at 29-24 in the beginning of the second half. The Titans responded with an 8-0 run and led 32-29 with seven minutes to go in the third. Three ties ensued with the last one at 36-36 with just under four minutes on the clock. Geneva got back on top and did not lose the lead for the remainder of the third with a 42-40 lead, heading into the final stanza. Titan senior
Jackie Mathews (Pittsburgh, PA / OLSH) led off the fourth quarter with a three to put Westminster in front (43-42) and the Titans never lost it for the rest of the game.
Six Titans scored in double-digits, led by Mathews, who tied a game-high four threes, with 14 points. Sophomore
Alazia Greaves (West Sunbury, PA / Moniteau) scored 13. Junior
Kayla Bennett (Kent, OH / Theodore Roosevelt), junior
Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell), first-year
Magen Polczynski (Irwin, PA / Norwin), and junior
Aliya Gage (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) all had 10 points. Bennett and Fromknecht each earned a double-double as Bennett grabbed down a team-high 11 rebounds, while Fromknecht had 10. The double-double marked Bennett's first of her career and Fromknecht's 15
th. Fromknecht added a game-best four blocks and a team-high two steals. Polczynski dished out a game-high five assists.
Westminster outshot Geneva, 38.9% (21-54) to 31.9% (22-69). Geneva led in rebounds, 48-41.
The Titans will host Bethany College Saturday, February 9 at 1:30 p.m. for Senior Day.
