CANEADEA, New York - The Westminster College women's basketball team opened the 2019-20 campaign with a victory against non-conference opponent Houghton College by a final score of 64-41 on the road Friday evening.
Westminster (1-0) and Houghton (0-1) were tied 4-4 early in the first quarter. However, the Titans rattled off a 7-0 run capped off by a three by first-year guard
Camden Hergenrother (Salem, OH / Cardinal Mooney) to give the Titans an 11-4 lead midway through the first quarter. Westminster led 11-9 after one quarter. In the second quarter, the Titans utilized another 7-0 run to extend their lead to 18-9 with 5:16 left in the first half. The Highlanders answered with a couple baskets of their own, but Westminster took a comfortable 26-16 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Titans ignited a 9-2 run to start the third quarter that extended their lead to 35-18. Westminster took a 43-22 lead into the fourth quarter and comfortably sealed the victory.
Senior forward
Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) led all scorers with a game-high 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds, which tied for a team-high with classmate
Kayla Bennett (Kent, OH / Theodore Roosevelt). Fromknecht also had a game-high five blocks, with four blocks coming in the first half. Senior guard
Brooke Lyczek (Cranberry Township, PA / Seneca Valley) and Hergenrother were each in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Lyczek finished 3-4 from beyond the arc while Hergenrother was 2-3 from long range. Senior guard
Aliya Gage (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) and sophomore forward
Megan Meyer (New Galilee, PA / Mohawk) contributed five points each off the bench. First-year guard
Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, PA / Brentwood) contributed four points and tied a game-high with three steals.
Westminster will be back on the court Tuesday, November 12 on the road when it takes on Penn State New Kensington in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
