NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College men's basketball team won, 84-74, against non-conference foe Penn State Shenango in the second day of the Buzz Ridl Classic on Saturday evening.
Westminster (2-1) got out to a quick 11-3 lead less than two minutes into the game. The Titans extended their lead to 34-14 at the 10:14 mark of the first half, which was their largest lead of the game. Penn State Shenango battled back to cut the Titans lead to seven points at halftime, trailing Westminster by a score of 45-38.
In the second half, the Lions tied the game at 58-58 with 10:33 left to play. However, the Titans responded with two free throws and a three ball from senior
Dylan O'Hara (Girard, OH / Girard) to give them a 63-59 lead with 8:33 remaining. Westminster never relinquished the lead for the rest of the contest.
O'Hara led all scorers with a game-high 27 points off of an 8-12 night from the field and was a perfect 5-5 from beyond the arc. Junior swingman
Isaac Stamatiades (Elkridge, MD / Avalon) also finished in double figures with 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Junior guard
Daniel Ritter (North Lima, OH / South Range) earned 11 points and shot 5-7 from the field. Junior forward
Josh Hutcherson (Uniontown, OH / Uniontown Lake) finished with eight points and three rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench.
The Titans shot 47.8% (32-67) from the field and 45.5% (10-22) from beyond the arc, while recording an 62.5% mark from the charity stripe. Penn State Shenango was 44.3% (27-62) from the field and 36.4% (8-22) from three. The Titans outrebounded the Lions 40-36.
Stamatiades, O'Hara and Ritter were all named to the Buzz Ridl Classic All-Tournament Team. Also earning All-Tournament recognition were Penn State Shenango guard Tyrone Steals, Bluffton guard Andrew Renner and Thiel guard Daquan Simmons.
Westminster will be back on the court Tuesday, November 19 when it takes on nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
