NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College volleyball team came back from being down 2-0 at Washington & Jefferson College to win 3-2 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) thriller.
Westminster, on a seven-match wining streak, improved to 15-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the PAC after winning the fifth set (15-7), including an 11-point run.
The first set was tied 11 times with the last one coming at 16. Washington & Jefferson (3-14, 2-4 PAC) took the lead and did not look back, winning set one, 25-19. The Presidents did not trail in the second set, edging the Titans throughout for a 25-21 victory to go up 2-0.
The Titans led for the majority of the third set and cut into the Presidents' lead, 2-1, with a 25-21 set three victory after a kill by senior
Reilly DeGeorge (Ashtabula, OH / Saint John).
Westminster stayed in striking distance in set three and took its first lead of the frame at 18-17
with another kill by DeGeorge. The Titans did not trail for the remainder of the set and forced a deciding fifth set after winning set four, 25-23, following a kill by sophomore
Maya Steward (Los Angeles, CA / William Howard Taft).
Down 5-2 early in the fifth set, Westminster orchestrated 11-straight points to take a demanding 13-5 lead. Steward sealed the Titan comeback-victory with a kill, after receiving a pass from junior
Haley Moore (Greensburg, PA / Greensburg Central Catholic), for a 15-7 Titan fifth-set win.
DeGeorge led the Titans with 17 kills, one shy of a season-high for a match, to go along with a career-best 42 digs. Senior
Josie Toporcer (Warren, OH / Lordstown) also set a career-best in digs with a team-high 43. Also registering double-digit kills for Westminster were sophomore
Becky Adelman (Randolph, OH / Waterloo) (career-high 15) and Steward (14). Sophomore
Samantha Kelly (Irwin, PA / Penn-Trafford) dished out a match- and career-high 31 assists. Moore added 18 assists, including the match-winner set. Steward also tied a season-high with 24 digs. Also earning double-figure digs for the Titans were Moore (14), Adelman (12), and Kelly (11). Senior
Haley Farmerie (Manor, PA / Greensburg Central Catholic) led Westminster with two blocks.
Westminster is back in action Saturday, October 5 with a home PAC contest against Waynesburg University at 1 p.m.
