Volleyball: Titans Blank La Roche in Home Opener, Remain Undefeated

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College volleyball team swept La Roche College, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-21), in its home opener in a non-conference contest Tuesday night.
 
Senior Delaney Saxton (Cortland, OH / Brookfield), the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Player of the Week, led the Titan offense with 11 kills. Junior Reilly DeGeorge (Ashtabula, OH / Saint John) and first-year Maya Steward (Los Angeles, CA / William Howard Taft) added seven and five kills, respectively. Steward also had a match-high three service aces and tied a match-best with two blocks. Senior Shanna Daniels (Hermitage, PA / Billy C. Ryan) dished out a match-high 17 assists, while senior Rachel Moore (Greensburg, PA / Greensburg Central Catholic) and first-year Samantha Kelly (Irwin, PA / Penn-Trafford) each had six assists. Moore led the defense with 16 digs, while DeGeorge had 13. Daniels added nine digs.
 
Westminster (4-0) was up 24-19 in the first set, however, La Roche (1-3), cut the Titan lead to 24-22. The Titans sealed set one after Saxton earned a kill from a pass from Daniels. Tied 11-11 in set two, the Titans went on a 9-1 run to take a commanding 20-12 lead and held off the Redhawks for the remainder of the set. The final set was tied at 15 before Westminster orchestrated a 6-0 run and led 21-15. La Roche got within two points of Westminster's lead (23-21), however, the Titans sealed the set and the match after a kill by Saxton and a block assist by sophomore Megan Steele (Corry, PA / Corry) and Steward.
 
The Titans are back in action at the four-match Northwest PA Challenge, starting on Friday, September 7 at 5 p.m. against the University of Mount Union. Allegheny College is hosting the first two Titan matches, then Penn State Behrend will host the final two.
