NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College women's soccer team defeated Chatham University, 2-1, in its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener at home on Saturday afternoon.
Westminster (8-3, 1-0 PAC) opened the scoring early in the first half at the four-minute mark as senior
Keely Birsic (North Ridgeville, OH / Elyria Catholic) found first-year
Reagan Olson (Delaware, OH / Rutherford B. Hayes) for her first goal of the season to give the Titans a 1-0 lead. In the 36
th minute, Birsic gathered a loose ball from 20-yards out and hit the back of the net, putting Westminster up 2-0. The goal was Birsic's team-high fifth of the season. With just three minutes left in the half, Chatham (6-3, 0-1 PAC) delivered on a corner kick, scoring from inside the 18-yard box to cut the Titan lead, 2-1. The score would stay the same at halftime.
In the second half, Westminster's defense, led by first-year goalkeeper
Camille Holzschuh (Youngstown, OH / Boardman), held the Cougars to zero goals and the Titans prevailed, 2-1. Holzschuh tallied a career-high nine saves in complete-game action.
Birsic led the Titans in shots with five, while also registering two shots on goal, an assist, and a score. Junior
Gabrielle Diamond (Moon Township, PA / Moon) finished with three shots and two shots on goal, while junior
Kayla Trozzi (Monroeville, PA / Gateway) and first-year
Ashley Frank (Mentor, OH / Mentor) each tallied two shots and one shot on goal.
Westminster is back in action Wednesday, October 3 at home against Waynesburg University. Start time is set for 7:30 p.m.
