Volleyball: Titans Go Undefeated at Wooster Classic

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Westminster College volleyball team went undefeated at The College of Wooster's Classic over the weekend. The Titans, riding on an eight-match winning streak, improved to 12-1 on the year.
 
On Saturday, the Titans won, 3-1 (18-25, 26-24, 25-9, 25-22), against Marietta College in their first match and followed with a 3-1 (25-18, 16-25, 29-27, 25-20) victory over host Wooster in match two. The win over Wooster was Westminster's first since 2013.
 
Titan first-year Maya Steward (Los Angeles, CA / William Howard Taft) was named on the All-Tournament Team. For the four-game tournament, Steward totaled 39 kills, 44 digs, nine service aces and seven blocks.
 
Against Marietta (7-6), the Titans came back in set two after being down 11-3 early in the set and 22-17 later in the frame. The Titans went on a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the set, 23-22, after a service ace by senior Shanna Daniels (Hermitage, PA / Billy C. Ryan). The Pioneers had set point at 24-23, however, Westminster won three-straight points to win 26-24, capped off with a kill by senior Delaney Saxton (Cortland, OH / Brookfield). Westminster was down, 18-17, in the fourth set, however went on a 4-0 run and never looked back. Saxton and junior Reilly DeGeorge (Ashtabula, OH / Saint John) led the Titan offense with 10 kills each. Three Titans had double-digit digs, led by DeGeorge with 17. Steward and senior Rachel Moore (Greensburg, PA / Greensburg Central Catholic) registered 16 and 14 digs, respectively. Daniels led Westminster with 21 assists, to go along with a team-high four service aces. First-year Samantha Kelly (Irwin, PA / Penn-Trafford) had 15 assists. First-year Becky Adelman (Mogadore, OH / Waterloo) and junior Haley Farmerie (Manor, PA / Greensburg Central Catholic) each registered a team-best four blocks.
 
Against Wooster (9-3), tied 1-1, the Titans fought off two set point opportunities by Wooster with the latest coming at 27-26. Westminster answered with three-straight points to win the set, capped off with a kill by Daniels. The Fighting Scots led 18-17 in the fourth set, however, the Titans regained the lead and never lost it to seal the match. Three Titans had double-digit kills, led by Saxton with a match-high 15. Steward and DeGeorge each had 12 kills. DeGeorge also earned a team-high two services aces, while Steward tied with Adelman for a team-best two blocks. Daniels dished out a team-high 28 assists, followed by Kelly with 17. Moore earned a team-best 17 digs, followed by DeGeorge (15) and Steward (12).
 
On Friday night, Westminster won 3-1 over Pitt-Bradford in the first match and swept Oberlin College, 3-0, in match two.
 
The Titans are back on the court Tuesday, September 18 with a home match against Mount Aloysius College at 7 p.m.
