Men’s Soccer: Westminster Nearly Upsets #14 Carnegie Mellon

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's soccer team nearly pulled off an upset against no. 14 nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon University at home Friday night.

The Titans were up 1-0 about halfway into the second half, however the Tartans rallied with two late goals, including the game-winner with less than two minutes to go for the 2-1 victory.

Titan sophomore Nick Iregui (Gig Harbor, WA / Charles Wright Academy) put Westminster (4-2) in front, 1-0, with a header off a corner kick from freshman Noah Weiss (South Park, PA / South Park) in the 63rd minute of the second half. Iregui now has a team-high seven goals on the year. Carnegie Mellon (4-0-1) netted the equalizer in the 77th minute when Jordi Long found Zack Masciopinto for a score off a deflection from a save. The Tartans scored the go-ahead goal with less than two minutes remaining in the game (88:22) off another deflection from a save. This time Jack Painter gathered the loose ball in the box and crossed it to Masciopinto for his second-straight goal.

Titan junior goalkeeper AJ Bove (New Stanton, PA / Hempfield Area) collected a season-high eight saves in a complete-game effort.

The Tartans outshot the Titans, 19-6, including 10-3 on goal, and held a slight 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Westminster will next travel to La Roche College Monday, September 17 at 4 p.m.
