NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College baseball team split against Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Bethany College in a doubleheader Friday afternoon.
Westminster took game one by a score of 8-1. Bethany won game two, 13-5.
Westminster (13-11, 7-7 PAC) jumped to an early 3-0 lead in game one in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore
Vince Guerrieri (Latrobe, PA / Greater Latrobe) reached on an error, scoring senior
Joseph Salmen (New Castle, PA / Union). Junior
Dante Parente (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk) doubled to right field (scoring Guerreri) and junior
Luke Ferlin (Latrobe, PA / Ligonier Valley) singled in Parente to cap off the scoring for Westminster in the first. In the bottom of the second, sophomore
Jaret Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles McKinley) homered to left, his third of the season to extend the lead, 4-0. In the top of the third, Bethany (9-20, 6-8 PAC) scored its first run of the game, cutting into the Titan lead, 4-1. Westminster sophomore
Tyler Barnot (Pittsburgh, PA / Bethel Park) grounded out to short, scoring Parente in the process, in the bottom half of the third to earn that run back and led, 5-1. Westminster would score one in the fourth and two in the eighth to win by a final score of 8-1. Parente (2-1) pitched a complete-game, giving up eight hits, one earned run and striking out four. Parente also went 2-for-4 with two runs, two doubles and two RBIs. Johnson went 3-for-3 with a home run, double, and two RBIs.
In game two, the Bison struck first in the top of the second with four runs to lead, 4-0. Johnson doubled to center field, scoring Barnot in the bottom of the second for a 4-1 game. The Bison would score four unanswered runs in the ensuing three innings to take an 8-1 lead. Ferlin singled to left field for an RBI in the bottom of the sixth (8-2), however, Bethany would score five runs in the top of the eighth (13-2). Westminster added three runs in the bottom of the ninth. Johnson went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, while Ferlin finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
Westminster is back on the field Saturday, April 28 at PAC foe Chatham University for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
