Softball: Liverman Ties All-Time Doubles Record; Titans Sweep Penn State Behrend

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College softball team swept non-conference opponent Penn State Behrend at home Monday afternoon, winning game one, 2-1 (8 innings), and game two, 8-3.

In game one, Penn State Behrend (7-5) got on the board first in the top of the third inning with a home run off the bat of Lauren Wentz. In the bottom of the fifth, senior Emiley Westfall (Jefferson, OH / Perry) drove in the first run of the game for Westminster (9-5), hitting a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing in senior Nikki Anderson (Oakmont, PA / Riverview) and tying the game at one. The game would stay the same until the bottom of the eighth inning. Senior Hannah Ritter (Front Royal, VA / Skyline), who started at second base due to the tie breaker rules, stole third base to put herself 60 feet away from being the game-winning run. Senior Alexa Owrey (New Castle, PA / Shenango) flied out to center field, and Ritter scored to give the Titans the 2-1 victory. Junior Kailey Liverman (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) and senior Addie Dieterich (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) each went 1-for-3 with the only two hits in the contest for Westminster. Titan senior pitcher Jazmyn Rohrer (Purcellville, VA / Woodgrove) earned her seventh victory of the season, throwing a complete-game while only giving up three hits, one earned run, and striking out ten batters.

In game two, the Lions struck first in the top half of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Westminster answered in the bottom of the frame with two runs, courtesy of a Liverman single and senior Courtney Cohen (New Wilmington, PA / Wilmington) forcing a walk with the bases loaded. The Lions would regain the lead in the top of the second (3-2), but Westminster countered with six runs of its own in the bottom of the second, including a two-RBI double from Liverman. The double marked the 37th of her career, tying her with Jennifer Pancake for most all-time in school history. The Titans would hold an 8-3 lead after two and win by the same score. Ritter (2-2) earned the win, pitching five innings and allowing five hits and had one strikeout.

The Titans are back in action Saturday, March 24 at non-conference opponent Pitt-Bradford in a doubleheader. Game one is slated for 1 p.m. and game two is set for 3:30 p.m.
