WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The eighth-seeded Westminster College women's basketball team lost, 86-71, to fifth-seeded Waynesburg University in the First Round of the 2017-18 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament Monday evening.
Waynesburg (15-11, 10-8 PAC) started on a 6-0 run in the opening minutes of the game. Senior
Paige Quinn (Pittsburgh, PA / Shaler) started the scoring for Westminster (7-19, 3-15 PAC) with a layup, propelling a 6-0 run of its own and tied the game, 6-6, with 4:43 left in the first. After a made three-pointer by Mackenna Drazich of Waynesburg, Westminster went on a 7-0 run and took a 13-9 lead with 2:19 left in the frame. The Titans led after one, 16-13. Waynesburg opened the second quarter with an 18-3 run, leading by as much as 12 points (31-19) with five minutes left in the half. Titan junior
Jackie Mathews (Pittsburgh, PA / OLSH) cut the lead to single digits (31-23) at the 3:55 mark, but Waynesburg went into halftime leading by a score of 43-30.
Quinn knocked down her second three pointer of the game at the 7:51 mark in the third to bring the Yellow Jacket lead down to 45-36, however, Waynesburg would gain control of their double-digit lead again and led by as much as 14 points three times. Sophomore
Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) helped spark a 5-0 run to bring Westminster back within nine points (57-48), but Waynesburg ended the third quarter with the lead, 61-48. Waynesburg held onto its double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Three Titans reached double figures as E. Fromknecht scored a game- and tied a career-high 20 points, Quinn scored 12, and sophomore
Kayla Bennett (Kent, OH / Theodore Roosevelt) recorded 10. Bennett secured a team-high six rebounds, while E. Fromknecht and senior
Kylie Cook (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon) each pulled down five. E. Fromknecht and Bennett tied a game-high with two blocks apiece, while senior
Kristine Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) pocketed a game-best three steals.
The Yellow Jackets outshot the Titans, 30-62 (48.4%) to 23-59 (39%). Waynesburg also led in total rebounds, 40-30. Westminster shot a season-high 27 free throws and converted on a season-best 20 of them (74.1%).
