Men’s Basketball: Titans Finish Strong in OT Win Against Grove City on Senior Day

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's basketball team won, 76-65, in overtime against Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Grove City College on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
 
The Titans outscored the Wolverines, 13-3, in overtime, led by senior Jarret Vrabel (Canfield, OH / Canfield) who was a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line. Westminster as a team was 10-for-10 from the charity stripe in extra minutes. Sophomore Cameron Kane-Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles) extended Westminster's lead to 68-63 with a three-pointer with 1:19 remaining.
 
In the first half, Westminster (16-7, 10-6 PAC) was up 12-4 after Kane-Johnson made a three-pointer, capping off a 9-0 run, with 13:50 on the clock. Grove City (15-8, 8-8 PAC) responded with a 15-2 run and led, 19-14, with 8:26 remaining. The Wolverines maintained their lead for the remainder of the half and led 29-24 at halftime. In the second half, junior Austin Armwood (Columbus, OH / Westerville North) tied the game at 33 with a three at the 17:54 mark. The Titans regained the lead, 35-34, after sophomore Lloyd Chatman (Columbus, OH / Reynoldsburg) made a layup less than a minute later. Nine lead changes would ensue, with the ninth one occurring when Grove City went up 53-52 with 6:29 left. Grove City was ahead for the next three minutes and led by as much as six points (58-52) with 5:35 remaining.  With two minutes left, Armwood found Vrabel on the top of the arc for a game-tying three (63-63). Neither team could find the go-ahead score, including a three-point attempt by Grove City's Cory Huff as time expired.
 
Four Titans scored in double-digits, led by Kane-Johnson who a tied a game-high with 20 points. Vrabel registered 18 points. Armwood and senior Deontay Scott (Youngstown, OH / East) tallied 14 and 11 points, respectively. Scott registered his ninth double-double of the season and 28th of his career as he grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, which also tied a season-best. Vrabel grabbed seven boards, while sophomore Blake Payne (Ashtabula, OH / Jefferson Area) had six. Vrabel also earned a game- and season-high four blocks and now has a 102 career blocks. He joined Mike Douds ('91) and Greg Foster ('03) as the only Titans to earn at least 100 blocks in a career. Armwood and Scott tied for a team-high three assists. Scott also tied Kane-Johnson for a team-best three steals.
 
Grove City outshot Westminster, 35.9% (23-64) to 32.8% (22-67), and had a 48-46 rebound advantage.
 
Westminster honored its seniors, Scott and Vrabel, before the game.
 
The Titans will play their final home regular season game of the year Wednesday, Feb. 14 against Geneva College in PAC action at 8 p.m.
