NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team defeated Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Waynesburg University, 73-64, at home Wednesday evening.
Junior
Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) totaled a career-high seven blocks on the night, which also tied the Westminster single-game record (Rachel Martinko/2007). Her first block of the game, at the 4:58 mark of the first quarter, was the 94
th of her career and is now most all-time in Westminster school history, surpassing Erica Tallo's (2001-05) mark of 93.
Waynesburg (2-6, 0-3 PAC) opened the first two minutes of the game on a 5-0 run. Westminster (4-4, 2-1 PAC) got on the board with a made layup from Fromknecht at the 7:58 mark (5-2). After a back-and-forth contest, Waynesburg led, 15-14, with just over two minutes left in the quarter. The Yellow Jackets ended the frame on a 7-0 run and took a 22-14 lead into the second quarter. Waynesburg started the second scoring five-straight points to extend its lead to 13 (27-14). Westminster countered with seven-straight points, cutting the Yellow Jacket lead to six (27-21) with 5:51 to play in the first half. Waynesburg went into halftime with a 31-27 lead.
Waynesburg jumped to a seven-point, 36-29 advantage within the first two minutes of the third quarter. The Titans cut the lead to two (36-34) after a made layup by first-year
Magen Polczynski (Irwin, PA / Norwin) at the 6:10 mark of the third. Waynesburg, however, rattled off nine-straight points to take its largest lead (11 points) since the 8:49 mark of the second quarter, 45-34, with three minutes to play in the quarter. The Titans outscored the Yellow Jackets, 12-2, in the ensuing three minutes and trailed by one, 47-46, at the end of the third.
Westminster took its first lead of the contest (49-47) at the 9:20 point of the fourth quarter. Waynesburg tied it at 53 (6:06) and regained the lead, 55-53, with 5:32 remaining in the game. With four minutes to go, the Yellow Jackets extended its lead to five (60-55). The Titans stormed back, scoring nine-straight points to earn a 64-60 lead with 1:49 remaining in the game. After a made Yellow Jacket free throw (64-61), Polczynski converted a layup to give the Titans a five-point, 66-61 lead (1:18). With 44 seconds to go, Fromknecht made two free throws to extend Westminster's lead to 68-61. Waynesburg got within four points (68-64), however, the Titans held the Yellow Jackets scoreless for the remainder of the game to win, 73-64.
Senior
Jackie Mathews (Pittsburgh, PA / OLSH) led the Titan offense with 16 points, while also recording two steals, two blocks, and five assists. Polczynski finished with 11 points, registered a career- and game-high nine assists, tied a career-best with a team-high three steals, and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds. Junior
Kayla Bennett (Kent, OH / Theodore Roosevelt) pulled down a career-best 12 rebounds, totaled nine points and tied a career-high with two steals. Fromknecht finished with eight rebounds.
The Titans outshot the Yellow Jackets 41.9% (26-62) to 32.4% (24-74). Waynesburg edged Westminster in rebounds 47-46.
Westminster next plays PAC opponent Washington & Jefferson College on the road Saturday, December 15 at 1 p.m.
