MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team fell to non-conference opponent Allegheny College, 73-57, on Monday evening.
Allegheny improved to 3-3 on the season, while Westminster dropped to 2-3.
In the first five minutes of the first quarter, the Gators held a 13-7 lead. After junior
Brooke Lyczek (Cranberry Twp, PA / Seneca Valley) made a layup (13-9), Allegheny extended its lead, 16-7, with a three-pointer with 4:25 left to go in the first. The Titans, however, outscored the Gators 9-2 in the stretch of two minutes to cut the Allegheny lead to two points (18-16). The Gators took a 23-17 lead into the second quarter. Allegheny took its largest lead of the half (35-22) with 4:53 in the second. Westminster cut the lead to seven points (35-28) with 1:35 to play in the second quarter, however, the Gators scored five points and held the Titans to only a free throw in the final minute and a half to take a ten-point, 39-29 lead into halftime.
Junior
Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) opened the scoring in the third quarter with two free throws to get within single digits of the Gators (39-31). Allegheny responded with a 7-0 run to lead, 46-31. The Gators led, 60-45, at the end of three and held a double digit lead the rest of the way.
Fromknecht led the Titan offense with 12 points and also grabbed a team-best eight rebounds. Fromknecht also dished out a team-best four assists, tied a game-high with a team-high two steals and converted six-of-eight free throws. Lyczek recorded 11 points, went four-for-four from the charity stripe and brought down four rebounds. Sophomore
Ashley Russell (Belle Vernon, PA / Belle Vernon) registered a new career-high in points with eight while senior
Jackie Mathews (Pittsburgh, PA / OLSH) pulled down five rebounds.
Allegheny outshot Westminster 43.9% (29-66) to 29.8% (17-57). The Gators also outrebounded the Titans, 45-38. Westminster shot a collective 20-for-28 from the free throw line, compared to Allegheny, who shot 5-for-6.
Westminster next hosts Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Chatham University on Wednesday, November 28. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
