NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team fell to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Chatham University, 79-59, at home Wednesday evening.
Chatham (4-3, 1-0 PAC) opened the game on a 9-0 run. Westminster (2-3, 0-1 PAC) first-year
Magen Polczynski (Irwin, PA / Norwin) made a layup at the 7:10 mark of the first quarter to put the Titans on the board. The Cougars led, 24-4, at the end of one. Chatham led 36-9 with seven and a half minutes left in the second. The Titans orchestrated a 10-0 run to cut into the Cougar lead, 36-19, with 4:53 left to play in the half. Westminster outscored the Cougars, 11-7, in the remaining 4:53 to end the half and trailed 43-30 into halftime.
The Titans cut the lead to single digits (44-35) with 9:01 to play in the third. After the Cougars regained a double-digit lead, Westminster got within seven points (55-48) with 1:07 remaining in the third. The Cougars led, 63-50, at the end of the third quarter. Chatham held a double digit lead the rest of the game.
Polczynski scored a career-high 19 points and tied a game-high with a career-high three steals. Senior
Jackie Mathews (Pittsburgh, PA / OLSH) totaled 10 points and four rebounds. Junior
Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) tallied nine points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Fromknecht also tied a team-high with three assists. Sophomore
Ashley Russell (Belle Vernon, PA / Belle Vernon) recorded seven points, while junior
Kayla Bennett (Kent, OH / Theodore Roosevelt) had four points, eight rebounds, and tied a team-high with three assists. Junior
Aliya Gage (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) pulled down five rebounds.
Chatham outshot Westminster 40.4% (23-57) to 30.8% (20-65). The Titans outrebounded the Cougars 46-37.
Westminster next travels to PAC opponent Thiel College on Saturday, December 1. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
