Men’s Basketball: Titans Come Up Big in OT, Win Over Chatham

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's basketball team won, 88-76, over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Chatham University in overtime at home Wednesday evening.
 
Westminster (14-4, 8-3 PAC) started the game with a 16-5 lead with 14:35 on the clock. The Titans had their largest lead of the frame, 28-12, after junior Dylan O'Hara (Girard, OH / Girard) made a three-pointer with 8:03 left. Chatham (4-14, 1-10 PAC) got within eight points of Westminster's lead (30-22) after a 10-2 run with 4:18 on the clock. The Cougars cut the Titans' lead to 35-29 with 1:59 left, however, the Titans ended the first half strong, outscoring Chatham 8-2 for the remainder of frame and led 43-31 at intermission. The Cougars started the second half with a 15-7 run to cut Westminster's lead to 50-46 with 14:01 on the clock. Chatham continued to battled and took its first lead of the game, 62-61, after Curtis Perz made a layup with 6:17 on the clock. Senior Deontay Scott (Youngstown, OH / East) quickly put the Titans back in front, 63-62, with a layup on Westminster's next possession. The Titans had a 68-62 lead, however, Chatham went on a 5-0 run, cutting Westminster's lead to 68-67 with 1:49 left. The Cougars took a late lead after Alex Schoppen made a three with 17 seconds left, putting Chatham ahead 70-68. Westminster quickly tied the game at 70 after sophomore Cameron Kane-Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles) found senior Jarret Vrabel (Canfield, OH / Canfield) for a fast-break layup with 10 seconds left. Schoppen had a chance to win the game for Chatham, but a jumper as time expired came off the rim. The Titans pulled away in overtime after outscoring the Cougars, 18-6.



Kane-Johnson scored a game-high 21 points. Vrabel added 19 points, while sophomore Lloyd Chatman (Columbus, OH / Reynoldsburg), junior Austin Armwood (Columbus, OH / Westerville North), and Scott each scored 10 points. Scott led all Titan rebounders with seven, while Vrabel secured six. Armwood dished out a game-high seven assists, while Scott pocketed a game-high three steals while adding five assists to his night. Marco Delorenzo (Canfield, OH / Canfield) and Blake Payne (Ashtabula, OH / Jefferson Area) each had two blocks.
 
Westminster outshot Chatham 49.3% (33-67) to 44.9% (31-69). The Titans also outrebounded the Cougars 29-24.
 
The Titans are back on the court Saturday, Jan. 27 with a road conference game at Bethany College, starting at 3 p.m.
