GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Westminster College men's basketball team won, 72-67, at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Grove City College Wednesday evening.
The Titans improved to 12-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play, while the Wolverines dropped to 10-4 overall and 3-4 in the PAC.
Three Titans scored in double-figures, led by
Austin Armwood (Columbus, OH / Westerville North) who scored a game-high 15 points. Juniors
Marco Delorenzo (Canfield, OH / Canfield) (13) and
Dylan O'Hara (Girard, OH / Girard) (11) also scored in double-digits. O'Hara's 11 points marked a career-high. Senior
Deontay Scott (Youngstown, OH / East) added eight points and tied a game-best with 10 rebounds. Sophomore
Cameron Kane-Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles) and senior
Jarret Vrabel (Canfield, OH / Canfield) each had nine points. Westminster tied a season-high with 14 made three-pointers. Vrabel, Delorenzo, O'Hara, and Armwood each had three threes. Kane-Johnson dished out a team-best four assists. Sophomore
Blake Payne (Ashtabula, OH / Jefferson Area) and Delorenzo each registered a game-high two blocks. Delorenzo also pocketed a game-best three steals.
Grove City jumped to an early 5-2 lead within the first 2 and a half minutes of the game. Westminster answered with a 14-0 run to lead, 16-5, with 12:39 to go. Grove City cut the lead to five (23-18), but Delorenzo hit a pair of free-throws to put the Titans back up seven (25-18), while starting a 10-0 run to give Westminster a 33-18 lead with 3:47 on the clock. The Wolverines hit a three as time expired and trailed the Titans 35-28 at half. With 17:26 to go, Grove City cut the Westminster lead to one point (37-36). Armwood and Delorenzo hit a pair of three-pointers to keep the Wolverines at bay, but Grove City took its first lead since the first half, 44-43, with 13:12 to go. Westminster capitalized by hitting six three-point shots in the next eight minutes to regain the lead, 61-54, with 5:29 remaining. Westminster led by three (70-67) with 14 seconds left. Armwood's free throws with 12 seconds to go sealed the Titan victory.
Westminster outshot Grove City, 43.4% (23-53) to 41.4% (24-58). The Wolverines outrebounded the Titans, 38-29.
The Titans will next host Saint Vincent College in a PAC showdown Saturday, Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. Both teams are currently tied for first in the conference standings.
