Men’s Soccer: Franciscan Edges Titans, 2-1

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's soccer team lost, 2-1, to Franciscan University at home under the lights of Harold Burry Stadium on Tuesday.

The Titans dropped to 2-3-1 overall, while the Barons improved to 4-1-0.

Franciscan took a 1-0 lead when Sebastian Koehler found Leo Herrmann off a deflection at the 41:28 mark. Less than 30 seconds later, Westminster responded with a goal of its own when sophomore Peter Mattocks (Saegertown, PA / Saegertown) split Baron defenders after receiving a lob-touch-pass from freshman Nick Iregui (Gig Harbor, WA / Charles Wright Academy) and placed the ball in the near corner of the net; senior Grant Gagnon (Johnstown, PA / Westmont Hilltop) was also in on the assist as he cleared the ball to Iregui. The score marked Mattocks's first of the season.

Herrmann broke the tie at the 56:55 mark of the second half with his second goal of the game as he made a move past the Titan defense in the box and found the back of the net.

For the game, Westminster outshot Franciscan 20-12, however the Barons held a 7-4 advantage in shots-on-goal. The Titans also had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. In addition to Mattocks's goal, senior Zack Walters (Hermitage, PA / Hickory), Iregui, and Gagnon each had a shot-on-goal.

Titan junior goalkeeper AJ Bove (New Stanton, PA / Hempfield Area) collected four saves, including a penalty kick stop, in 90 minutes of work.

The Titans are back on the field Friday, September 15 when they travel to No. 21 Carnegie Mellon University. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
