Baseball: Bethany Rallies Past Titans

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College baseball team lost, 7-5, to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Bethany College at home in a nine inning game on Sunday.
 
Westminster (5-14, 2-6 PAC) led 3-0 after five innings of play; senior Sean Coyne (New Castle, PA / New Castle) scored junior Joseph Salmen (New Castle, PA / Union) in the first inning, singled home Salmen in the third inning, and also scored on an Bison error in the third. Bethany (7-10-1, 2-5-0 PAC) got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Neil Woods hit a solo home run. The Titans took a 5-1 lead in the seventh inning after Coyne connected on another RBI-single, bringing home Salem, followed by freshman Jaret Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles McKinley) singling home Coyne. In the eighth inning, Woods hit a two-run single to cut Westminster's lead to 5-3. The Bison rallied in the ninth inning with four runs to take a 7-5 lead; Brandon Wagner had an RBI-walk, while John Lee and Woods each had an RBI-single. Zack Miller scored the fourth run off a Titan error.
 
The Titans outhit the Bison 12-11. Salmen and junior Brandon Rossier (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) led the Titans with three hits each, while Coyne had two. Titan sophomore Cody Acon (Industry, PA / Western Beaver) started the game and pitched 7.1 innings and gave up three runs (one run through seven innings) on four hits. He struck out four and walked five. Sophomore Cory Pullen (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) (0-1) came in for relief for one inning and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits.
 
Westminster is back on the field Wednesday, April 5 with a nine-inning game against Washington & Jefferson College at 4 p.m.
