NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College softball team swept Penn State Behrend in a non-conference doubleheader at home on Thursday.
The Titans won game one, 8-1, and won game two, 9-8, in eight innings.
Westminster improved to 10-6 overall, while Penn State Behrend dropped to 6-10.
In game one, sophomore
Kailey Liverman (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) started the scoring with an RBI-double in the first inning, scoring junior
Emiley Westfall (Jefferson, OH / Perry). Junior
Hannah Ritter (Front Royal, VA / Skyline) scored another Titan run in the third inning off a Lion error. Penn State Behrend cut Westminster's lead to 2-1 when it scored its lone run in the fourth inning when Alexa Bupp doubled home AJ Nichols. Junior
Courtney Cohen (Wilmington, PA / Wilmington) extended the Titans' lead to 3-1 after a solo home run, her first of the season and third of her career, in the bottom of the fourth inning. Westminster pulled away with five runs in the sixth inning. Senior
Emily Lindsey (Freeport, PA / Freeport) doubled home
Cheyenne Shifflett (Etters, PA / Trinity), Lindsey scored on a wild pitch, Westfall brought home junior
Addie Dieterich (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) with a single, and senior
Checka Nardone (Ellwood City, PA / Lincoln) singled in Ritter. Junior
Jazmyn Rohrer (Purcellville, VA / Woodgrove), who improved to 5-0 overall, allowed one run (none earned) on nine hits in a complete game effort. She tied a season-high with six strikeouts and had no walks.
In game two, Lindsey put the Titans on the scoreboard with an RBI-single, scoring Westfall. In the top of the third inning, the Lions took a 2-1 lead after Shannon McDonnell connected on a two-run single. Westminster regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third; Liverman scored Westfall as she reached on a fielder's choice, Rohrer singled home Lindsey, and junior
Alexa Owrey (New Castle, PA / Shenango) brought home Cohen with a double. Penn State Behrend cut the Titans' lead to 4-3 after Lacey Hilderbrand earned an RBI with a walk. Westminster added to its lead in the fourth with three runs; Nardone scored on a wild pitch, Liverman scored on a passed ball, and Cohen singled home Lindsey. The Lions, however, scored two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game at 7; Allania Banta hit a two-run home run in the sixth and AJ Nichols connected on a two-run double in the seventh. In the top of the eighth inning, Banta singled home Kelsey Heinrich to take an 8-7 lead for Penn State Behrend. In the bottom of the eighth, Liverman doubled home Ritter for the tying score. Nardone, who walked and advanced to third after Liverman's double, scored the game-winning run after a throwing error by the Lions. First-year
Kayla Troxil (Canfield, OH / Canfield) (3-5) pitched 5.0 innings, while giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits. She struck out four and walked one.
The Titans are back on the field Saturday, April 1 for its Presidents' Athletic Conference opener at Geneva College. Game one of the doubleheader will start at 1 p.m.
