Men’s Lacrosse: Titans Win Conference Opener, 14-8, Over Mount. St. Joseph

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's lacrosse team won, 14-8, over Mount St. Joseph University in its Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) opener at home on Saturday.
 
Titan sophomore Ryan Shorts (Westlake Village, CA / Oak Park) registered a game-high seven points, while tying a game-high four goals and earning a team-high three assists. Sophomore Luke Ostoyic (Kentson, OH / Kenston) also had four goals, which is a career-high, to go along with two assists. Freshman Chris Slater (Pittsburgh, PA / Central Catholic) added three points (two goals and one assist), while freshman Dylan Wolford (Apex, NC / Apex) had two points (one goal and one assist)
 
Titan sophomore goalkeeper Carter Hall (Zeeland, MI / Zeeland West) (3-2) collected 14 saves in a complete-match effort.
 
Freshman Chris Ryczaj (Pittsburgh, PA / Central Catholic) gathered in a game-high 11 ground balls. The Titans held a 47-24 advantage in ground balls. Wolford added six groundballs.
 
The Titans outshot the Lions 67-34, including 38-22 on goal.
 
Westminster (3-2, 1-0 ORLC) took a 2-0 lead after goals by Ostoyic (10:15) and freshman Chris Slater (Pittsburgh, PA / Central Catholic) (9:06). Mount St. Joseph (1-7, 1-1 ORLC) scored their first run at the 8:01 mark from the stick of Kevin McClanahan. Two more consecutive Titan goals by Shorts and freshman Ryan Stiemly (Edgewood, MD/Edgewood) put Westminster in front 4-1 with 4:31 left. After Mount's Connor McPhail scored with 3:51 on the clock, Shorts registered his second goal of the game with 3:03 to put the Titans ahead 5-2. The Lions scored two-straight goals to cut the Titans' lead to 5-4 with 18 second left in the first. Each team scored two goals in the second quarter and Westminster led 7-6 at halftime; freshman Dante Serra (Center Valley, PA / Southern Lehigh) and Wolford scored the Titan goals. The Titans outscored the Lions 7-2 in the second half to seal the win; Slater (12:11), Shorts (7:10, 0:33), Ostoyic (4:59), and Culp (0:45) scored the Westminster goals in the third quarter, while Ostoyic (11:28, 3:50) scored the Titan goals in the fourth.
 
Westminster is back in action Wednesday, March 29 with a home game versus La Roche College at 7:30 p.m.
