Softball: Titans Split with Hiram in Home Opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College softball team split with Hiram College in its home-opening doubleheader on Tuesday.

The Titans lost, 4-3, in eight innings in game one, and won, 10-3, in the second game.

In the first game, Hiram (4-8) took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning. In the bottom of the first, Titan junior Emiley Westfall (Jefferson, OH / Perry) doubled home senior Checka Nardone (Ellwood City, PA / Lincoln) to tie the game, 1-1. Sophomore Cheyenne Shifflett (Etters, PA / Trinity) put Westminster in front, 2-1, after singling home Westfall in the sixth. In the seventh inning, Hiram's Haley Adams scored the tying run on a wild pitch, forcing extra innings. The Terriers scored two runs in the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, junior Courtney Dieterich (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) cut Hiram's lead to 4-3, scoring junior Addie Dieterich (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley). The Titans, however, were not able to overcome the deficit. Titan first-year Kayla Troxil (Canfield, OH / Canfield) (1-5) pitched a complete game, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits. Troxil struck out three and walked two.

In the second game, Hiram led 2-0 after two runs in the second inning. Westminster tied the game, 2-2, in the third inning after junior Jazmyn Rohrer (Purcellville, VA / Woodgrove) connected on a two-run double, scoring sophomore Kailey Liverman (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) and Westfall. The Titans pulled away after a six-run fourth inning and led 8-2. The Terriers tallied their final run in the fifth, while the Titans added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Liverman, Rohrer, and junior Nicole Anderson (Oakmont, PA / Riverview) each registered two RBIs. Westfall earned a triple and joined junior Alexa Owrey (Castle, PA / Shenango) with a stolen base. Westfall (1-0) earned the win after coming in for relief. She pitched 4.2 innings, while giving up one run on four hits, to go along with a strikeout.

Westminster (7-5) is back in action Saturday, March 25 with a doubleheader at Pitt-Bradford. Game one is set for 1 p.m.
