Baseball: Titans Swept by Mount Union in Home Opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College baseball team lost both games in its home-opening doubleheader versus non-conference foe Mount Union on Tuesday.
 
The Titans lost the first game, 7-0, and fell 4-2 in the second game.
 
In game one, Mount Union (11-3) scored one run in the first inning, one in the second, one in the fourth, and four in the seventh. Billy Goodall highlighted the seventh with a grand slam. The Purple Raiders outhit the Titans, 9-3. Titan junior Brandon Rossier (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) registered a team-high two hits, including his team-leading fifth double on the season. Westminster senior Nate McMaster (Stow, OH / Stow-Munroe Falls) (1-1) pitched six innings, while giving up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits. He struck out one batter and walked the same.
 
In the second game, the Purple Raiders led 2-0 going into the sixth inning. The Titans tied the game at 2 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Rossier scored junior Joseph Salmen (New Castle, PA / Union) off a sacrifice fly and sophomore Brad Stein (Boynton Beach, FL / Palm Beach Central) singled home freshman Connor Cox (Ridge, MD / Leonardtown) for the tying run. Mount Union went back in front with two runs in the seventh courtesy of two RBI-singles. Junior Justin Abbs (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) (0-2) came in for relief for 0.2 innings and gave up two runs on four hits, to go along with a strike out. Westminster freshman Jaret Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles McKinley) tallied a team-high two hits.
 
The Titans (3-8) are back on the field Friday, March 24 with a nine-inning game at Waynesburg University for their Presidents' Athletic Conference opener with a 3 p.m. start time.
