Baseball: Rossier Hits Walk-Off Single, Titans Split Florida Games

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Westminster College baseball team split its two games during its Florida Coast Spring Training trip on Tuesday.
 
Westminster won, 4-3, against Gettysburg in game one and lost, 10-4, to Mount Saint Vincent in game two. Both were nine-inning games.
 
In game one, Titan freshman Jaret Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles McKinley) singled home sophomore Michael Douds (Erie, PA / Cathedral Prep) in the fourth inning and Westminster led 1-0. Gettysburg tied the game, 1-1, with a run in the sixth inning and took a 3-1 lead with two more runs in the seventh. Johnson tripled in the eighth, scoring junior Brandon Rossier (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny), cutting Gettysburg's lead to 3-2. With the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth inning, Rossier connected on a walk-off two-run single, bringing home sophomore Brad Stein (Boynton Beach, FL / Palm Beach Central) and senior Tyler Bommer (Renfrew, PA / Seneca Valley). Titan junior pitcher Joseph Salmen (New Castle, PA / Union) (1-0) threw a complete game, while allowing three runs (one earned) on nine hits. He struck out a career-high 13 batters and walked none.
 
In game two, Mount Saint Vincent led 3-0 after scoring three runs in the second inning. Senior Kellen Gursky (Greenville, PA / Reynolds) put the Titans on the scoreboard as he scored Rossier with a ground out in the bottom of the second. Mount scored two runs in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead. Douds singled home Salmen in the bottom half of the third, cutting Mount Saint Vincent's lead to 5-2. Mount pulled away with a run in the fifth inning, one in the sixth, and three in the seventh. Freshman Jared Lee (Lordstown,OH / Lordstown) added a Titan run in the seventh on a wild pitch and freshman Nick Tremper (Wellsboro, PA / Wellsboro) singled home Douds in the eighth. Freshman Marcus Masters (Warren, OH / Warren) (0-1) pitched 2.2 innings and gave up four runs on three hits. He struck out two batters and walked three.
 
Westminster (2-4) is back on the field Wednesday, March 15 with a doubleheader versus Mount Saint Vincent. Game one is slated to start at 10 a.m.
